We engaged a group of Year 11 students in Birmingham in a series of art workshops, as part of their creative curriculum. The group were specially selected to explore the brief: 'How can we support effective communication in our school and its community?' The students were empowered to develop their ideas into a high-quality piece of artwork, to improve the appearance of the entrance to the art department.
Workshops took place during scheduled art lessons, and began with a brain-storming session and focus group. Ideas from the initial discussion were developed into basic illustrations. We guided the students through creative techniques to allow them to expand their ideas, and to produce designs which could be translated into a large scale mural.
The group was then shown how to integrate the different designs together into one communal piece of artwork, and how to scale it up to a larger size. The group were taught how to use aerosol paint, which they used to create the final piece of art on 14 ft x 4 ft flexible boards. This allowed the artwork to be installed around the curved stairwell at the entrance to the art department.
"Hedz worked well with students and staff, encouraging students to consider carefully, reflect together, develop their ideas, and remain focused to make well considered artwork. Hedz was particularly effective in developing teamwork... " Marcus Belben, Creative Agent. The artwork now adorns the school, and has helped to encourage several students from this group to choose Art as one of their options for Year 12.
